Family Photos from the War Years, 1937-1947
Intending to be back in the United States only long enough to obtain his seminary degree and return to China, World War II's arrival extended Wesley's stay in America to almost 10 years. 27 when he arrived back from China, he was 37 when he returned. During this time his father Roby, 65 when Wesley returned, continued at St. Paul's Methodist Church until he retired in 1945 at the age of 73. A Wesley's autobiography notes, during these years he met and in 1941 married his wife Ruthlydia.
In 1939 at the Montgomery Methodist Church in Clagettsville, Maryland, on route 27 north of Damascus, descendants of Wesley's grandfather Jackson Day gathered for a reunion.

According to a leter, on June 18, 1943 James Roby Day, Jr, and his cousin Jackson encountered each other somewhere on the West Coast. Scan by James Roby Day, Jr.

With their retirement in 1945, Roby and Vivia could spend full time at "Dunroven", their retirement home on Westside Drive in Allenwood, New Jersey. On right, holding granddaughter and namesake Vivia Ruth Day. Scans by James Roby Day, Jr.

With Wesley's travels it was not every day that a photo could be taken with all four boys. In 1945 Roby and Vivia seized the opportunity for a formal photograph.

Ruthlydia Day was pleased to pose with her daughter Vivia.

At the age of 73, Roby Day retired from the pastorate of St. Paul's Methodist Church in Inwood, and posed with Vivia outside the church.

Finally, in 1947 plans were being made for a return to China. On left, son Jack poses with a flower beside their car. On the right, Wesley, Ruthlydia and children pose in Auburn, New York, with Ruthlydia's mother Luella Baird Slayton.
